Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course. You will work towards either an Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2 qualification dependent on your current qualifications and the outcome of your pre-entry assessment. Your study will continue until formal achievement of an Award in Number and Measure at Level 2.
What does the course involve?
Functional Skills qualifications provide reliable evidence of your achievements against challenging content that is relevant to the workplace. The qualifications assess your underpinning subject knowledge and your ability to apply this knowledge to different contexts. They provide a foundation for progression to employment and further education, and help to develop skills for everyday life.
How you’ll learn
Entry Level 1:
In order to gain a certificate in Mathematics at Entry Level 1, you will study a course which leads to taking an externally set, but internally administered test which accounts for 60 per cent of the mark, and a standard task, which accounts for 40 per cent of the marks. There is no set time for when each test or task is completed or how long it takes to complete each test.
Entry Levels 2 and 3:
At Entry Level 3, you will sit an externally set, but internally administered non-calculator and calculator test, which consists of mainly worded questions. The inclusion of a test which includes a calculator means that progression towards Level 1 is more closely aligned.
Award in Number and Measure at Level 1 and Level 2:
There is one written paper with two sections. The paper contains 80 marks in total. Section A allows the use of a calculator, with 50 marks being available, and section B contains non-calculator questions and is worth up to 30 marks. The qualification is pass or fail only. Assessment is available in January and May.
