RNC governors in the dark!
Student Sam Smith recently impressed the College's governors with a unique and insightful Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) project. Sam's project focused on creating an immersive learning experience for the governors, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by blind and partially sighted students.
To begin with, Sam had three ideas and to determine which would be the most suitable he undertook a SWOT analysis, and then set about meticulously planning an event filled with activities designed to showcase independent living skills, mobility techniques, and assistive technology.
The centrepiece of Sam's project was a 'dine in the dark' experience for the governors. This activity provided a glimpse into the world of navigating and enjoying a meal without sight.
Sam's presentation showcased his meticulous planning process. From attending a governor's meeting to propose his concept, to securing equipment and recruiting fellow students to participate.
Student volunteers played a vital role, sharing their personal experiences with visual impairments, assisting the governors while blindfolded, and being able to speak confidently in public. The planning phase also involved logistical considerations. Sam planned mobility routes, booked the College kitchens, and even decided on a specific activity – cooking scrambled eggs!
To ensure safety during this activity, Sam enlisted the support of the College's Independent Living Skills (ILS) team.
While the day unfolded largely according to plan, Sam highlighted a few minor hurdles encountered. A slight confusion with the food order during the 'dine in the dark' activity arose, but it did not significantly impact the overall experience. Additionally, some activities took slightly longer than anticipated. Despite these minor hiccups, the project garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback from the governors.
Beyond the positive impact on the governors' understanding, Sam himself reaped valuable rewards from this project. Throughout the process, he developed his project management skills by successfully organising and overseeing an event with many facets. He also significantly developed his communication abilities, interacting and collaborating effectively with a diverse range of people, including governors, college staff, and fellow students.
This experience will undoubtedly serve Sam well in his future endeavours.
