AS/A Level English Literature (Level 3)
Duration
One year for AS Level, two years for A Level.
Entry requirements
You will require five GCSEs (or equivalent) including English Language at grade 5 or above, English Literature at grade 6 or above, and Mathematics at grade 4 or above.
What does the course involve?
The main subject for AS and Year 1 of A Level English Literature will be ‘Love Through the Ages’, covering Shakespeare, poetry and prose.
The main topic for Year 2 of A Level will be ‘World War One and its Aftermath’, exploring literature arising out of the Great War, and extending this period to allow reflection on the full impact of the war that reverberates up to the present day.
The A Level also includes a coursework element which gives you a wide choice of texts to write a comparative critical study across a theme of your choice.
How you’ll learn
Students are taught in small groups; there is a mixture of discussion and written work. Students undertake lesson preparation tasks as well as formal essay ‘homework’ and exam practice. The A Level coursework unit offers the chance for both supported and independent study.
How you’ll be assessed
- AS: 100% examination
- A Level: 20% coursework and 80% examination
Where will it take me?
After studying A Level English Literature, most students go on to Higher Education. A Level English Literature is highly valued by universities and can enable entry onto a range of subjects. Careers include researcher, digital copywriter, journalist, school teacher.
