Studying History will help you understand the significance of historical events, the role of individuals in history and the nature of change over time.

The course covers two engaging periods of history. British History delves into The Tudors, while non-British History takes you through Democracy and Nazism: Germany 1918-1945. These units carry across both AS and the second year of A Level.

At the end of the AS year, if you are continuing with the full A Level, you will get teacher support and advice from the examination board on identifying a topic that you can research and study independently.

Teaching methods

You are taught in small groups; there is a mixture of discussion and written work. You will undertake lesson preparation tasks as well as formal essay homework and examination practice. Materials are available electronically where appropriate, and a range of super-curricular, high quality audio-lectures are available to all students via the Massolit platform. Key texts are also produced in a variety of paper-based formats such as large print and Braille, although the main textbooks have been adapted for access using electronic working media, such as magnification, Q-Braille and JAWS.

Gofynion

For AS and A Level History, you will need GCSEs (or equivalent) in English at grade 5 or above, Mathematics at grade 4 or above, and History at grade 6 or above. There will also be an internal assessment to ensure that you are working at the appropriate level. However, your individual circumstances can be discussed at your Pre-Entry Assessment. You will only be able to join us for the second year of A Level, if you have studied AS units which are identical to the ones we offer.

Assessment Methods

AS: 100% examination
A Level: 20% coursework and 80% examination

One year for AS Level and two years for A Level.
AS and A Level are separate qualifications but are taught alongside each other for the first year. This gives AS students the opportunity to switch to the full A Level if they are ready.

After studying A Level History, students go on to Higher Education to study degrees in History or other humanities subjects, or you may choose from a wide range of other disciplines including Journalism, Politics, International Relations, American Studies, Sociology and Anthropology.

Studying History provides a wide range of employment opportunities. Future careers may include work in museums and libraries, law or the civil service, or as a researcher or political assistant to an MP.
