Level 3 qualifications for those planning to go on to university.

 

What does the programme involve?

If you have achieved Level 3 qualifications but require further support to be independent and successful in the next step of your life, this one year course will equip you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to address the needs of independent study and independent living on your transition to Higher Education.

The programme will not only provide knowledge and skills at a suitable level but, also further Level 3 qualifications and UCAS points to enhance the opportunities of progression on to a wide range of universities.

Support will be provided with the research of appropriate degree courses and Higher Education establishments as well as the completion of your UCAS application.

You will be taught by experienced teachers who are specialists in visual impairment and in small groups with materials provided in an appropriate format – large print, electronically and/or Braille.

This tuition will enable you to embed your skills in using a computer or Braille technology and work with others in an environment to develop a range of skills. The support provided will make links to competencies learnt in Mobility, Braille, ICT and Independent Living Skills in order to embed key practices for independence.

You will receive support to further develop an IT based medium for independent working on a variety of tasks, with emphasis in your written work, maintaining high standards of presentation, proof-reading and accuracy.

You will also practice using speech access as well as screen magnification technology, since this will help you to avoid postural fatigue, which could be a particular issue at degree level.

This course includes both examined and coursework-based work, so you will be able to acquire skills in examination preparation using a variety of suitable tactile methods, alongside skills in self-organisation and time management.

Coursework-based units in the programme will focus on practical communication skills for your future chosen career path and will give an opportunity to further develop your confidence and self-esteem in a professional context.

By the end of your placement, you will have achieved a level of independence in Mobility and Independent Living Skills appropriate to your ambitions, age and future plans for adult life, and be able to transfer these skills to less structured and unfamiliar environments in preparation for transition to Higher Education.
