Charlotte really made the most of the Careers and Transitions support when at RNC. She said:
‘Although I focused on higher education, the help and advice was open to interpretation most of the time. We had mock university interviews and job interviews among other activities to help get us thinking.’
During her work placements, Charlotte worked for the charity Look-UK doing administration and planning and later for a week with Hereford-based dance teacher, Laura Gale, who was teaching in schools.
‘Doing work placements really helped change my perspective on employment and work. Before this I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. These experiences enabled me to find the pathway that I wanted to follow.’
Today Charlotte is in her third year at York St John University studying Education Studies with Special Educational Needs and Inclusion and is busy looking for a job after graduation in the summer.
Charlotte is continuing with careers sessions at university because she is not sure whether she would like to teach in the classroom or in the dance studio.
‘I’m still not entirely sure what I want to do. I always wanted to work with visually impaired children because I never had that when I was at school and I want to be someone that children can talk to.’
When asked for her best advice for young people making that transition from College into higher education or employment, Charlotte added:
‘I would say take every opportunity that is offered whether it’s a mock interview, CV writing or volunteering. Everything will benefit you in the long run. You are only going to improve from it and it is something you can add to your skill set.’
